Lightened up BBQ Green Beans smothered in a homemade barbecue sauce then baked with thinly sliced onions. The perfect vegetable side dish for potlucks and holidays.

4 cups green beans (trimmed (if fresh); or 2 x 15-oz cans rinsed and drained canned green beans)
1/2 yellow onion (thinly sliced into half-moons)
1/2 cup ketchup (look for one with low sugar or no added sugar)
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (look for a vegan brand to make these vegan)
1 tbsp maple syrup
1/2 tsp garlic powder

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13 baking dish and set aside.
  • Combine the trimmed green beans and thinly sliced onion in a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, maple syrup, and garlic powder. Pour over the green beans and onions. Mix until well coated.
  • Transfer to the baking sheet, and bake for ~20-25 minutes, or until the green beans and onions are tender. Enjoy!

This recipe was given to me at a Bible study picnic by a dear lady who loved to make up her own recipes. I've shared it with many friends, including missionaries who have taken it to other countries!

6 bacon strips, diced
1 small onion, chopped
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 packages (10 ounces each) frozen cut green beans, thawed

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove to paper towels; drain, reserving 1 tablespoon drippings. Saute onion in drippings until tender. Add the ketchup, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce; cook and stir until mixture comes to a boil., Place green beans in a greased 1-1/2-qt. baking dish; top with onion mixture and bacon. Cover and bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until beans are tender.

Found this in an old cookbook of mine. I tried this with a combination of ketchup, and BBQ sauce, and we liked the results.

1/4 cup onion, chopped
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 cups green beans

Steps:

  • Brown bacon in skillet until crisp, and then break into pieces, reserving 2 tablespoons bacon drippings.
  • Saute onions in the bacon drippings.
  • Combine ketchup, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, worcestershire, and salt, and stir into bacon and onions.
  • Pour mixture over green beans, and mix lightly.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes, or until beans are tender.

1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed
2 tablespoons butter
1 small shallot, minced
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • In a 6-qt. stockpot, bring 4 quarts water to a boil. Add beans; cook, uncovered, just until crisp-tender, 2-3 minutes. Remove beans and immediately drop into ice water., In a small skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add shallot; cook and stir until lightly browned, 2-3 minutes. Add garlic; cook 30 seconds longer. Remove from heat. Drain beans and pat dry., In a large bowl, combine beans, shallot mixture and cheese; toss to coat. Transfer to a piece of heavy-duty foil (about 18 in. square) coated with cooking spray. Fold foil around beans, sealing tightly., Grill, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 in. from heat until cheese is melted, 7-9 minutes. Open foil carefully to allow steam to escape.

Steps:

  • Chop bacon and cook it in a large nonstick pan. Remove bacon and set aside.
  • Discard all but 2 tablespoons bacon grease. Add onion to bacon grease left in pan and cook until soft.
  • In a medium bowl, stir together ketchup, brown sugar, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  • Add green beans to a lightly greased 4 to 6 quart crock pot.
  • Add onions along with any bacon grease left in pan to crock pot.
  • Pour ketchup mixture on top and stir in.
  • Sprinkle bacon on top. Cover crock pot and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours.

1 pound Green beans (fresh or canned)
⅓ cup barbecue sauce
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 ounces ham, diced
½ cup onion, diced
1 clove garlic, diced
1 tablespoons butter
¼ cup water
salt & pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Clean and stem the green beans. Slice or snap in half if they are too long
  • Heat a large skillet over medium high heat then add the oil and saute the diced ham, onion, and garlic until the ham is cooked and lightly browned and the onions are soft. Remove the mixture to a medium sized bowl.
  • In the same skillet, add the green beans and water. Stir and cover with a lid to steam until tender-crisp, about 7-10 minutes. Stir the green beans around a few times during steaming.
  • Stir in the barbecue sauce and add the ham, onions, and garlic to the green beans. Cook over medium-low heat until the barbecue sauce has thickened and coated the green beans for about 10 minutes.I prefer to put the beans in a 350° F. oven and bake for about 15 minutes to caramelize the barbeque sauce.
  • Serve hot.
  • Store all leftovers in the refrigerator for up to three days.

1/2 lemon (juiced, optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat a grill to medium-high.
  • In the bottom of a large bowl, whisk together olive oil, garlic, cumin, paprika, and cayenne. Add green beans to bowl and toss to coat evenly.

  • Prepare grill for direct cooking using lump charcoal. Or for a gas grill, prepare two burners at medium high heat.
  • On a large sheet tray, lay out green beans and coat in olive oil, kosher salt, and pepper. Toss.
  • Place green beans perpendicular to grate over direct heat for 5 to 6 minutes or until a slight char and then flip. Cook over direct heat another 3 - 5 minutes and remove.

  • Prepare a clean grill for cooking on medium heat about 350 - 400 degrees F.

Two 15.5-ounce cans dark red kidney beans, drained and rinsed

1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon yellow mustard

Steps:

  • Preheat a grill for cooking at medium-high heat.

½ cup white sugar
½ cup brown sugar

  • Place the chopped bacon in a large saucepan, and cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until evenly browned and crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove the bacon and set aside. Drain the grease from the pan.
  • Stir the vinegar, white sugar, and brown sugar into the pan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Drain 2 cans of green beans and add them to the vinegar mixture. Pour 2 undrained cans of beans into the mixture, and stir the bacon back into the beans. Stir lightly to combine. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until the sauce is thickened and the flavors have blended, about 20 minutes.
